Reel Mower Sharpening Basics

Yard notes · August 2026

Reel mower sharpening is where a “cheap” used machine becomes expensive, or where a fair price turns into years of clean cut.

On greens and fairway units, the reel and bedknife have to meet evenly. If the grind is gone, you will chase quality of cut with extra passes and unhappy members.

What we look at on intake

  • Land width and relief on the reel blades
  • Bedknife edge and attitude
  • Roller and bearing play that throws the cut off
  • Whether a backlapping routine will hold until the next grind

Buying tip

Ask for recent grind notes when a course sells a machine. If nobody has that paperwork, budget shop time before the unit hits tournament week.
